Get Out of Jail Free!

On the first day of a course, I give each student a “Get Out of Jail Free” card.  They can use the card anytime throughout the semester for the following reasons:

  • Bad quiz/assignment score – redeeming the card will allow them to receive all points for the assignment
  • Forgot to do an assignment – redeeming the card will allow them to be able to turn in the assignment for points
  • Came to class late (my students lose all of their points for the day if they come late or leave early)
  • Electronic device use (if their phone or tablet “chirps” for a text message or voice message during class – they lose all their points for the day – side note:  if my phone “chirps” – everyone in the class gets two extra credit points!)
  • Students can NOT redeem the card for any examination.

  1. While not as popular as monopoly, I have been giving students a mulligan — in fact, when I golf, I use a mulligan on every hole. It is an incentive and gone is that “all is lost feeling.”
